7 Wordle Facts You Probably Didn't Know

Since its explosive rise in 2021, Wordle has become a daily ritual for players worldwide. But how well do you really know this simple yet addictive word game? Here are 7 Wordle facts you probably didn’t know!

1. Wordle Originally Had 13,000 Words, Now Only 2,309 Remain

At first, Wordle's word bank contained about 13,000 five-letter words. However, developer Josh Wardle and his partner Palak Shah manually curated the list, removing obscure or difficult words, leaving only 2,309 words as possible daily answers. This means that if you play every day, Wordle’s list will run out in about six years!

2. Wordle Has a Hidden "Caps Lock Mode"

If you enter a completely correct word (like "CRANE"), delete it, and re-enter the same word, Wordle will display it in all caps as if to say: "You already guessed that!" While a minor detail, this subtle feature has surprised many observant players.

3. The Infamous "Wordle 242" Incident Left Players Stuck

On February 16, 2022, Wordle’s answer was "AROMA", and it became a nightmare for players worldwide. The word pattern "ARO_A" had too many possible answers, such as "AROMA," "AGORA," "ABOMA", and more. Many players ran out of attempts without finding the right word, leading to a flood of frustrated complaints on social media. This day became known as one of the most infamous moments in Wordle history.

4. Wordle’s Ancestor Was a Game Show Called "Lingo"

Although Wordle seems like a fresh concept, it actually shares a lot in common with the 1987 American game show "Lingo." In Lingo, players had to guess five-letter words while receiving Wordle-like feedback (correct letters in the right place, correct letters in the wrong place, etc.). Wordle can be considered a modern digital adaptation of this classic game.

5. The First-Ever Wordle Answer Was "CIGAR"

Wordle’s daily word system follows a fixed order. The very first recorded Wordle answer dates back to June 19, 2021, and the answer was "CIGAR." Although Wordle wasn’t widely discovered until October 2021, the word list had already been pre-set by the developer.

6. Some Words Have Been "Banned" and Won’t Appear Again

After The New York Times (NYT) acquired Wordle, they removed some controversial or sensitive words, including:

  • "FETUS" – Removed due to the abortion rights debate in the U.S.

  • "SLAVE" – Removed to avoid racial connotations

  • "LYNCH" – Associated with historical racial violence If you played an older version of Wordle, you might have encountered these words, but they are now permanently removed from the official word list.

7. Some Words Are Statistically Harder Than Others

Not all Wordle words have the same difficulty level. According to data analysis, one of the easiest words to guess is "PLANT" (because it contains common letter combinations), while one of the hardest words is "JAZZY" (due to the rare letter "Z" and its repetition). So, if you ever feel like a Wordle puzzle is unusually tough, you might have hit one of the statistically harder words!
